Great Southern Lights is live, and Entain was first out of the gates

Entain's TAB Cup Week creative, a jockey and racehorse at full stride, glowing on LUMO's Great Southern Lights corner screen in Penrose at night

Cup Week is one of the biggest weeks of the year for Entain's TAB, and this year it had a brand-new stage. As racing fever built towards the Melbourne Cup, a jockey and horse thundered across the corner of Great South Road and the South Eastern Highway. TAB had just opened LUMO-Great Southern Lights, our newest and biggest roadside screen, right on time for Cup Week.

The 158.4-square-metre screen wraps around the Penrose intersection and is visible from all four approaches. TAB's 3D creative stretches across both faces with one simple call to action: "Get your bet on this Cup Week."

Built for the hero moment

For TAB, Cup Week is a hero moment, and that is exactly what Great Southern Lights is built for. The screen is made for a campaign's biggest moments: the launch, the reveal, the week everyone is talking about.

Two connected faces give creative teams room to play. Copy can turn with the traffic. A story can unfold from one side to the other. And 3D creative can push out from the frame instead of sitting flat inside it.

The audience to match

knOOH data puts Great Southern Lights at 2.2 million impressions a week*. The corner sits at the heart of one of Auckland's busiest trade and industrial areas, with more than 3,000 trade, wholesale and construction businesses within two kilometres.

Sylvia Park and Mt Smart Stadium are close by, and Great South Road links the site to the CBD, the airport and south and east Auckland.

Eight brands, eight different takes

Entain was in good company. Every launch partner used the screen in its own way:

  • The Warehouse stacked the corner high with Christmas toys ahead of its busiest season.
  • One NZ reminded Aucklanders that "Black Friday is a great day for deals".
  • Resene unveiled its bold new "Where colour lives" brand creative in two vivid colourways.
  • Z Energy brought its master brand campaign to the commute: "Z is for flaky pastry and car vacuuming".
  • AA Insurance told drivers it has their back, "Whatever the road brings".
  • Vistar Media showed advertisers how to "Make your message impossible to ignore".
  • Kiwibank put a green woolly sheep high above the skyline with "Buck the system".

Kiwibank and Vistar Media were the first to run programmatic campaigns on the screen.

"Resene is a brand that's known for colour and creativity, so being part of the Great Southern Lights launch felt like a natural fit. The scale of the site aligns perfectly with our bold new brand creative and provides the perfect canvas to bring it to life."

Georgia McNaught, Client Principal, Together

"Great Southern Lights gives New Zealand creative teams a canvas they haven't had before. Its world-class 3D capability lets brands design for the structure itself, opening up a wealth of creative possibilities. We're proud to be running programmatic campaigns on the screen in launch week, and I can't wait to see how brands and agencies use it to push the boundaries of what outdoor can do."

Sandra Scott, Vistar Media

Ten years in the making

Great Southern Lights arrives in LUMO's tenth year. We've spent a decade making roadside screens behave more like digital media: live audience data, programmatic buying, dynamic creative and, this year, motion through Subtle.

"Great Southern Lights has been a real team effort, from the people who built it to the partners who backed it before it was switched on. We've spent ten years making roadside screens work harder for brands, and this site lets us take that further. Seeing Entain open it during Cup Week, one of their biggest weeks of the year, is a great start, and I'm looking forward to what creative teams make for it next."
