Colours of New Zealand

New Zealand’s natural landscapes are rich with vibrant colours, yet most homeowners choose neutral paint shades. For years, the country’s top selling colour was Black White, a safe choice that reflected a fear of getting colour wrong. Despite Dulux offering thousands of locally inspired hues, the brand struggled to inspire Kiwis to bring bolder colours into their homes.

In partnership with LUMO Labs, Dulux set out to prove that colour belongs in Kiwi homes by turning the nation itself into the inspiration. High definition cameras were placed behind digital billboards around the country, capturing live colours from the surrounding scenery. A custom system converted these colours into hex codes and matched them to the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range in real time.

Each billboard displayed Dulux paint shades taken directly from the landscape behind it. By showing real, paintable colours drawn from familiar places, Dulux made colour feel easy, relevant and personal. New Zealanders could finally see that the colours they love outdoors could live inside their homes too.
